How TMS Therapy Works
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation uses focused magnetic fields, similar in strength to those produced by an MRI machine, to stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Who Is a Good Candidate for TMS Therapy?
TMS is not typically a first-line treatment for depression. It is most often recommended after other approaches have been tried without adequate success. Our psychiatrists evaluate each patient individually, but the following patterns commonly indicate that a TMS consultation is worth exploring.
You May Be a Candidate for TMS If You:
- Have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder or OCD
- Have tried at least one, and typically two or more, antidepressant medications without adequate improvement
- Cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressant medications
- Prefer a drug-free treatment option or want to reduce medication reliance
- Do not have non-removable metal implants in or near the head (excluding standard dental fillings)
- Have no history of seizures or conditions that significantly increase seizure risk
- Can commit to daily sessions for 4 to 6 weeks at our Corpus Christi clinic
