Psychiatrist. Medical Director. Community Leader.

Dr. John Lusins III joined South Texas Mental Health Associates as a founding member and Medical Director, bringing a depth of clinical experience rarely found in outpatient psychiatric practice. After completing medical school, he pursued a psychiatric residency at West Virginia University followed by a fellowship in forensic psychiatry, a subspecialty that requires advanced training in the intersection of mental health, law, and complex clinical populations.

That forensic background informs how Dr. Lusins approaches diagnosis: with precision, thoroughness, and an awareness that accurate evaluation matters. Patients working with Dr. Lusins receive careful psychiatric assessment, evidence-based medication management, and a treatment plan that takes the whole person into account, not just a checklist of symptoms.

Beyond STMHA, Dr. Lusins serves as Medical Director of Esperanza de Tejas, a local nonprofit working to expand mental health resources for underserved members of the community. He was named a Top Doctor by The Bend Magazine and has been recognized for his commitment to closing the mental health gap in South Texas.

Dr. Lusins sees patients at all three STMHA locations, including our primary Corpus Christi clinic, San Antonio, and Edinburg. Telehealth appointments are available for patients throughout Texas.

Top Doctor Recognition

Recognized as a Top Doctor by The Bend Magazine for outstanding contributions to psychiatric care in the Coastal Bend region.

Psychiatric Care Rooted in Precision and Compassion

Dr. Lusins combines advanced clinical training with a practical, patient-centered philosophy that produces real results for patients across South Texas.

Forensic Psychiatry Training

A forensic fellowship at West Virginia University required mastery of complex diagnostic evaluation and high-stakes clinical decision-making. That precision transfers directly to outpatient care, where accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment.

Evidence-Based Medication Management

Dr. Lusins specializes in the careful selection, titration, and monitoring of psychiatric medications. He weighs the evidence for each patient individually and adjusts treatment over time based on response and tolerability, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Veterans and Tricare Expertise

With clinics near Lackland AFB, Fort Sam Houston, and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, STMHA serves a large military population. Dr. Lusins has experience treating combat-related PTSD, military sexual trauma, and transition-related mental health challenges. Tricare is accepted at all three locations.

Clinical Leadership Across STMHA

As Medical Director, Dr. Lusins oversees the clinical standards for all three STMHA locations. His leadership ensures that every provider, at every clinic, delivers care consistent with the highest benchmarks of evidence-based psychiatric practice.

Community Commitment

As Medical Director of Esperanza de Tejas, Dr. Lusins extends his work beyond the clinic walls to support underserved members of the community. Mental health care, in his view, is not a service reserved for those who can easily access it.

Telehealth Throughout Texas

Patients who cannot make it to a clinic can still receive care from Dr. Lusins through STMHA’s secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. Telehealth appointments for medication management and follow-ups are available to patients anywhere in Texas.
