Understanding depression

Real care for a condition that is more common than most people think

Depression is a medical condition. It changes sleep, appetite, energy, focus, and how your brain processes reward. It can make things you used to enjoy feel flat, and small tasks feel impossible. It is not a character flaw and it is not something people can just push through.

At South Texas Mental Health Associates in San Antonio, we treat depression the way any serious medical condition should be treated: with a full evaluation, an honest conversation about options, and a plan that gets adjusted based on how you respond. That plan often includes therapy, medication management, or both, and sometimes referral to advanced treatments when standard approaches have not been enough.

For patients whose depression has not responded to at least two antidepressants, we offer referral pathways to Spravato (esketamine) and TMS therapy at our Corpus Christi clinic, both FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression.

Our approach

How we treat depression at STMHA

One team, one plan, adjusted as you respond. Psychiatric prescribing and therapy coordinated in a single practice.

1. Comprehensive evaluation A full 60-minute intake with a psychiatric provider. We look at symptoms, history, prior treatments, medical factors, and what has actually helped in the past.
2. Evidence-based therapy Structured therapy (CBT, EMDR when trauma is involved) with a licensed clinician, focused on the specific way depression is showing up for you.
3. Careful medication management When medication makes sense, our providers explain options honestly, start conservatively, and follow up frequently until you are stable.
4. Advanced options when needed If two antidepressants have not helped, we discuss Spravato and TMS therapy at our Corpus Christi clinic. Both are FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression.
