Understanding medication management

Careful prescribing, not a one-size prescription

Psychiatric medication can be life changing when it is prescribed thoughtfully and monitored closely. It can also be frustrating when it is not. At South Texas Mental Health Associates in San Antonio, medication management is a real, ongoing relationship with a psychiatric prescriber, not a five-minute refill visit.

Every plan starts with a full evaluation. Your provider takes time to understand your history, symptoms, other medications, and goals before recommending anything. From there, treatment is personalized. If medication is the right fit, we walk you through options, expected benefits, potential side effects, and how we will measure whether it is working.

Our San Antonio team treats depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, and insomnia, among other conditions. Care is available at our clinic on NW Military Highway and by secure telehealth across Texas. No referral is required, and most new patients are seen without a long wait.

Our approach

How medication management works at STMHA

Same team, same records, same providers over time. That is what makes psychiatric medication management actually work.

1. Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation Your first visit is 60 minutes with a psychiatric provider. We review your symptoms, history, other medications, family history, and what you have already tried. Nothing is prescribed until we understand the whole picture.
2. A plan you actually understand If medication makes sense, your provider explains why they are recommending it, what to expect in the first weeks, potential side effects, and how we will know it is working. You get real answers, not a rushed handoff.
3. Careful titration and adjustments Getting a medication and dose right often takes a few adjustments. We start conservatively, follow up frequently in the beginning, and adjust based on your response rather than guessing.
4. Ongoing follow-up, real coordination Once stable, most patients are seen every 4 to 12 weeks. If you are also in therapy at STMHA, your prescriber and therapist coordinate on your care so nothing falls through the cracks.

Choosing an approach

How treatment approaches compare

There is no universal answer to "medication or therapy?" The right choice depends on the condition, severity, and your goals. Here is the general landscape.

Approach Where it fits Time to response
Therapy alone Mild to moderate anxiety, mild depression, adjustment reactions, situational stressors, and when patients prefer non-medication treatment. Practical skills often useful within a few weeks; deeper change over months.
Medication alone Moderate to severe symptoms, or when therapy is not accessible or preferred. Many conditions respond well. 4 to 8 weeks for most antidepressants; days to weeks for stimulants and some anxiolytics.
Combined care Moderate to severe depression, treatment-resistant conditions, PTSD, and complex presentations. Often the strongest long-term outcomes. Layered: medication and therapy reinforce each other over months.

Adapted from American Psychiatric Association treatment guidelines. Your provider will discuss which approach fits your situation.

Good to know

Medication management questions, answered

Medication management is the ongoing process of evaluating, prescribing, and adjusting psychiatric medications under the care of a licensed provider. It includes a full evaluation, a personalized plan, follow-up visits to check how you are responding, and coordination with any therapy or medical care you are already receiving.

In mental health, medication management means a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner works with you over time to find and maintain the right medication and dose for your condition. It is not a one-time prescription. You are seen regularly so your provider can monitor progress, side effects, and any changes in your life or health.

No referral is required. You can request an appointment directly with STMHA and we will help you get scheduled at our San Antonio clinic or by secure telehealth.

Our San Antonio providers treat the full range of psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, and insomnia. If medication is not the right fit, we will say so and connect you with therapy options.

Yes, when clinically appropriate. Our psychiatric providers follow careful prescribing guidelines, including stimulant medications for ADHD when indicated. Every controlled substance prescription follows Texas law and involves ongoing monitoring.

Follow-up frequency depends on your medication and how you are responding. Most patients are seen every four to twelve weeks once stable. Early in treatment, or when adjusting doses, visits are typically more frequent.

Yes. STMHA offers secure video visits for medication management across Texas. Some medications, particularly controlled substances, may require an in-person visit at our San Antonio clinic per state and federal rules.

We accept most major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Tricare, and Medicare. We verify your benefits before your first visit so you know what to expect.
