Understanding ADHD

Real evaluation, not a five-minute rule-out

Adult ADHD is often missed for years, sometimes because it was diagnosed as anxiety, sometimes because it did not look like classic hyperactive presentations. Inattentive ADHD, in particular, can go unrecognized well into adulthood, especially in women. The result is a lot of people wondering why the standard advice about focus and productivity has never worked for them.

At South Texas Mental Health Associates in San Antonio, ADHD evaluation is thorough. Your first visit is 60 minutes with a psychiatric provider, and includes a review of symptoms, developmental history, sleep and mood, and any other factors that can look like ADHD. We rule in and rule out carefully, because getting the diagnosis right shapes everything that follows.

Treatment is individualized. That may include stimulant medication, non-stimulant options like atomoxetine or guanfacine, therapy and skill-building, or a combination. Our psychiatric team manages medication carefully and monitors response over time. For adolescents ages 6 to 17, Eric Seilhamer, DNP, our board-certified PMHNP, provides child and adolescent psychiatric care.

Our approach

How we evaluate and treat ADHD at STMHA

Thorough evaluation, honest options, and ongoing management. Not a stimulant prescription in a rushed visit.

1. 60-minute comprehensive evaluation Symptoms, developmental history, sleep and mood, and screening for conditions that overlap with ADHD, like anxiety, thyroid issues, and sleep disorders.
2. Careful diagnosis We rule in ADHD and rule out (or identify) common look-alikes. Getting this right protects you from a plan that will not help.
3. Personalized treatment plan Options may include stimulant medications, non-stimulant medications, therapy, and skill-building. Your provider explains each option and why they are recommending it.
4. Ongoing management Follow-up visits to monitor response, adjust as needed, and coordinate with any therapy work. Controlled substance prescribing follows Texas law.
